Using the Immune System to Treat Cancer

Immunotherapies are treatments that restore or enhance the immune system’s ability to fight cancer. NCI has long supported research in this important area, with a number of promising efforts underway. President Obama Honors Nation’s Top Scientists and Innovators

The NCI scientists whose discovery contributed to the commercially developed HPV vaccines are among the recipients of this year’s National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Douglas R. Lowy, M.D., and John T. Schiller, Ph.D., will receive their medals at a White House ceremony later this year.
